WORKHOUSE: 2018-2019 Research Studio
Over the course of the Fall Quarter, studio researches existing co-working spaces as a way to formulate an argument about what this phenomenon means for architecture. The argument has a direct influence on the design projects in subsequent quarters. Research is conducted through precedent presentations and site visits. Students work in pairs to prepare four presentations over the course of the quarter with a Final Presentation during the studio visit to Japan. There are two presentation types, Precedent Analysis and Research Argument.
Throughout the Winter Quarter, students continue to work in groups of 2-3 to develop a basis for design of the spring studio project. At its core, the basis for design is developed as a programmatic ecology, or a thoughtful coordination of relationships that will exist around the co-working projects. During the Winter Quarter, students develop detailed brief document that involves proposed site, square and estimate the value of the system through business and programmatic analysis of the proposal. By the end of the Winter Quarter, students write an essay as part of the conceptual development of the project. The final deliverable for the Winter Quarter is animated video and series of infographics that illustrate the research.
In the Spring Quarter, students work individually to design a comprehensive architecture that produces and is produced by these relationships.
