ABOUT xLAB SUMMER PROGRAM

In partnership with Shinkenchiku-sha, xLAB established the three-year xLAB Summer Program sequence. The xLAB Summer Program is a cross-disciplinary catalyst for architectural education that develops strategies for our built environment through experimental exchanges, the testing of ideas, and the sharing of knowledge.

As a platform, the xLAB Summer Program brings together students with diverse faculty from architecture, business, technology, and science professionals in a flexible, non-hierarchical educational model.

As a hub, the xLAB Summer Program creates an international and interdisciplinary network, allowing academic and professional participants to expand their research networks and contribute to a global knowledge.

As a laboratory, the xLAB Summer Program tests strategies and presents ideas to understand the impact of technology on our built environment.

Each year a new programmatic theme offers a research topic on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Community (2017), Mobility (2018), and Diversity (2019). The Tokyo 2020 Olympics present a 21st Century case study in which to study, develop, and test new strategies on the future of the city and the architectural discipline. Students and faculty explore concepts on urbanism, including infrastructure, technological integration with existing systems, and simulated non-physical environments.

The xLAB Summer Program is sponsored by Mitsui Fudosan and organized by xLAB in collaboration with Shinkenchiku-sha and A+U Publication, with support from UCLA – Department of Architecture and Urban Design, University of Tokyo – Department of Architecture, UCLA – School of Arts and Architecture, and the Urban Design Center Kashiwa-no-ha. The xLAB Summer Program is co-directed by Hitoshi Abe, Kengo Kuma, and Atsushi Deguchi.
